Thanks, RCurtin. Reverting to a backup of the front end is something I'd really rather avoid because I don't know when the problem started. It took a while with 31,000 long records in the table. I just linked the table and copied just the structure then tried to append the data from the linked table into the new table but it failed with the same error

I found a record that had some corrupt data in it, and when I deleted it, the query worked! It's quick & easy. I relinked the database to the tables in the backend and the problem went away but as The_Doc_Man points out it could come back again. I did run a compact and repair recently and I may have previously had to have my session cancelled when some logic was looping. Does this mean that the database is corrupt and could this problem be linked to that? The transient nature of the effect and your observation of window sizing as a factor suggests that it might be memory related.
