While I was getting the Disk Read Error I could boot from the Vista setup DVD, run Repair, and it would boot,... But that is not the permanent solution. With "a disk read error" message,  this is an indication that the IDE ribbon cable or the SATA cable is bad and/or the hard drive is bad. As a first measure I would run a chkdsk c: /r in cmd - e.g. It will not boot into Windows. Replacing the data cable may fix it, but usually not. 7.
